Concert Review: Starfucker at Mercury Lounge 4/21/09
Last night Isabel and I went to see Starfucker at Mercury Lounge. I was really excited for this show. I had their album at number 5 on my Best of 2008 list.
The last time I was at Mercury Lounge I think I was 22. I didn’t realize they even had concerts there. I am not sure if it is a new thing, but they have a tiny back room with a small stage. It felt more like a frat house than a concert venue. We got there at 9:45 and caught the opening act ‘Guidance Counselor’. We weren’t even sure who they were and thought they were Starfucker for the first few songs. We both thought it was weird that they weren’t playing any songs off the album. At 10:30, Starfucker came on.
In a word, they were amazing. We stood first row. I have never been this close before. I was deaf for the rest of the night but it was totally worth it. There were 3 of them plus the drummer from Guidance Counselor. All 4 of them played multiple instruments and were completely in sync. It felt like music was just flowing through all of them. Like they were channeling it from the gods. Isabel likes to say that certain shows put her in a trance (Notwist, David Gray) and this was one of them. I completely agreed. A must-see next time they are in town.
I found this video from a few months ago that looks like it was shot from the exact place we were standing.
