Concert Review: Mother Mother at Bowery Ballroom 2/18/09
Mother Mother was my favorite new band of 2008. ‘Oh My Heart’ was my second favorite album of 2008. Needless to say, I was really excited to see them for the first time. Thanks to Greg for finding out about the show and getting tickets.
The show was amazing. They came on at 9 and played for 45 minutes straight (they were the opening band for Sam Roberts). They didn’t really pause between songs which probably allowed them to fit in another 2 songs in the short time slot allotted. They played most songs on the new album, 2 from their first album and 1 new one. They opened with ‘Hayloft’ which is Greg’s favorite.
The really cool part of the night happened after they played. Right after the set, they were on the floor, packing up their equipment. The lead singer, Ryan Guldemond, was standing right next to me. I went up to him and just told him how much I love them. He was very nice and we talked for a little about the set and venue. It’s always a lot of fun when a band is still ‘small’ enough to be approachable. I always wish that bands I love become huge, but then once they do, something is always lost. It’s worth treasuring the shows when you can stand 4 rows from the stage and talk to the band members after.
