Gmail has silenced me!

Back when I was at ITP, I took a class called ‘Rapid Prototyping of Social Software’ taught by Sean Kelly. Of the many brilliant things he said, one that has stuck with me is the idea to have your software send you emails to be notified of events and things. He said gmail is perfect for it since you can create labels and filter things very easily. That is exactly what I have been doing for the past 5 years.

The other day, I started using some PHP software to send emails from my gmail account as opposed to from the built-in Sendmail. I did this to help with emails getting through spam detectors.

I’ve been testing this for the past few days, sending 2 emails every minute to myself from a cron job. This works great but one side effect was that the emails are originating from my gmail account. Well, Google now thinks I might be a spammer since I am sending a lot of email. They have now blocked me from sending emails. The FAQ says it will only be for 24 hours. It’s kind of insane not having the ability to send emails. If you don’t hear back from me today, now you know why!
