Concert Review: Wilco at Keyspan Park 07/13/09
On Monday night, I went to see Wilco at Keyspan Park in Coney Island. This was the first Wilco show I have been to. They are my 3rd most listened to artist since 2004, so it was long overdue. The show was great. I was a little nervous that they were going to play songs mostly from their new album which I have only heard a handful of times. But that was not the case. They played a ton of songs from Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, A Ghost is Born and Sky Blue Sky.
The venue was awesome. I saw Phish there in 2004 and loved it then too. It is right on the boardwalk, next to Nathans. Before the show, I met up with a bunch of friends, ate a hot dog and drank some beers. The weather was beautiful and the crowd was very into it. We stood in the center, not very far back. The sound was great. They brought up Feist and the lead singer from Grizzly Bear for a few songs. They played many songs for the encore, including California Stars and The Late Greats.
It is always great to go back to Coney Island. I was born in Brighton Beach (the town next door) and lived there for a year before moving to Long Island. My Grandma lived in Brighton Beach for 40 years and I visited her often. I love the neighborhood. When I was young, we used to go to Astroland all the time and ride the bumper cars and eat Nathans. It was the first time I was back there in a few years and it brought back great memories.
