Augmented Reality - Awaire’s Yellow Brick Road

Back in 2004, while a grad student at ITP, I took a class called Design Expo. The class was a competition sponsored by Microsoft. The idea was to envision how communication would change in 3-5 years.

My group (Anne, Dimitri and Isabel) came up with Awaire. Awaire was a portable mp3 player and accompanying service. Since this was for 3-5 years out, we imagined a world where the portable mp3 player had a high speed data network, location-based services and a social network attached to it.

With all those cool things, we imagined that the mp3 player would have access to all the world’s music. We imagined that you could send your friends songs, see who around you was listening to what and play some really cool games.

Yellow Brick Road was one such game. A person could send another person in a different location a Yellow Brick Road that would lead them to where they were. Using music, the person would be lead by the changes. In the video below, the yellow and red on the street are just to help us watchers see what is going on. The person walking in the video does not see colors. He only hears music.

Why am I posting this now?

  1. It is 5 years later. I am pretty sure we could pull this off on the iPhone or Android.
  2. Design Expo is going on right now. Ruxy is there with her team.
  3. A lot of Augmented Reality demos are popping up.
